The Rocky Mountain Fertility Center utilizes strict policies to determine whether or not a potential egg donor is qualified to donate in order to ensure that recipients have the best chance of conception. Donor eggs, also referred to as oocytes, are used when a woman’s own eggs cannot be used to conceive. In some cases, a woman may not be able to provide eggs for her own conception, but can still take part in gestation. For these women, donor eggs are almost always the preferred option. Donor eggs are used in cases related to premature menopause, a lack of ovaries, chemotherapy or cancer treatment which has impaired egg production, surgeries which compromised the ovaries, lack of success with fertility drugs, poor egg quality, age, or for those who carry certain genetic disorders.

Not everyone can qualify to be an egg donor. Successful egg donors are chosen based on very strict criteria, including age, health, family history, lifestyle choices, and psychological health. Women who are chosen to donate must be between the ages of twenty one and thirty two years old. They must have a normal ovulation cycle, and should have a great health history. Their family health history must be free of any genetic disorders deemed to be significant, and they must past a full physical and psychological evaluation.

In addition to these qualifications, donors are also screened for sexually transmitted diseases, and their results must be negative. Egg donors may opt to remain anonymous, and the vast majority does so. However, in some cases, an infertile couple may request that a known friend or family member contribute a donated egg to their conception attempt. Those who receive donor eggs should be under the age of fifty. While unable to produce their own eggs, they are otherwise fit to carry a pregnancy to term. The eggs are received unfertilized, and the donor egg is them fertilized with donor sperm or the sperm of the recipient’s partner. The fertilized egg is then implanted into the recipient’s womb. When donating an egg, the donor typically undergoes a similar procedure to that of women taking fertility treatments, including daily injections of hormones, frequent ultrasounds, and extensive blood work. The eggs are retrieved utilizing a syringe guided by transvaginal ultrasound imaging. While the process is a difficult one, it does have a very high success rate—as high as eight of ten conceptions per attempt.
