Arthrodesis, or joint fusion, fixes the bones of a joint together and eliminates the joint’s articular function. It is considered to be the standard in the treatment of arthritis. Motion may be assumed by the surrounding unfused joints to compensate, but the fixation has a side effect of placing these surrounding joints at further risk of degeneration. Joint fusion is accomplished through various metal devices, most of which are similar to those used in internal fixation for traumatic injury purposes.
