SGS publishes SafeGuardS looking at the release of Consumer Goods (Care Labeling) Information Standard 2023 for clothing and textile products.

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS covering the latest developments affecting care labeling for clothing and textiles in Australia.

The Federal Register of Legislation in Australia officially released the Consumer Goods (Care Labeling) Information Standard 2023 on August 28, 2023. It sets out the mandatory requirements for labeling on a number of different products, including:
• Clothing
• Household textiles
• Apparel (wedding dresses, christening gowns, etc.)
• Furnishings
• Upholstered furniture
• Bedding & sleeping bags
• Mattresses
• Bed bases
• Piece goods
• Yarns – textiles, plastics, plastic-coated fabrics, suede, skins, hides, grain leathers and/or furs

It does not cover:
• Second-hand items
• Footwear
• Drapery

Consumer Goods (Care Labeling) Information Standard 2023 replaces and repeals Consumer Product Information Standard Care Labeling for Clothing and Textile Products (Consumer Protection Notice No. 25 of 2010). It is based on certain sections of:

• AS/NZS 1957:1998 Textile – Care labeling
• ISO 3758:2012 Textiles – Care labeling code using symbols

SGS has published SafeGuardS 130.23 to help stakeholders understand the scope of the new regulation and its enforcement dates.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS for more information.
