There is only one sure way to succeed in rock and roll

All the really great rock stars knew this one fact of life at the very beginning. If you are already a superstar of rock and roll, you have the luxury of touring or chilling out after a great album.

You are in a hot new rock and roll band that just cut an album so sharp it cuts steel. You are extraordinarily well received by the public. You are smokin' red hot. Now, what do you do?A. It's party time with the babes on some tropical beach to enjoy your success. B. Take your time and put together a good follow up album. Nothing. Enjoy your new found fame and take a quick break. D. Tour and promote, that's the way it’s done. If you voted for option A, you are a complete idiot that would need a smokin' red hot record to get laid. Go home you dweeb. It is not going to happen to you anyway. If you chose b, you are one of the laziest so and sos on the planet. What, you stopped writing songs and music to record? The only good songs you ever wrote are on the one album? You shot your one hit wonder wad and it’s time to go home, rme babyface. If you chose option C, nothing is exactly what is going to happen to the rest of your career, bonehead. Finally, option D. If you chose this one, you are still a moron.

Tour until the freakin’ cows come home. It will do you no good when these songs get old.The problem with most rock bands that could have been in the superstar stratosphere and missed is that they had no foresight. If you release a bad first album, or at least, one not well received, do like Elton John and go back to the drawing board. If your very first album is smokin' red hot, you had better follow up with something even hotter or you are going to the very front of the bonehead line. The follow-up is the key to success in rock and roll. It is the be all and end all, the ultimate and the only way to move forward towards a successful career in music.

All the really great rock stars knew this one fact of life at the very beginning. If you are already a superstar of rock and roll, you have the luxury of touring or chilling out after a great album. First time hits need second time hits to validate them. People have to say to themselves and to each other... "I knew they were good but damn!" Once your second album blasts the top off the charts, then you can both chill and tour until you are blue in the face as long as you are still writing music. The one hit wonders in rock would have been fine in any other genre. In country, a hit is a hit and if you do not follow up, that hit is a classic hit. In rock, that hit becomes just another good song in crowded radio station playlist with a million other good songs and you, my pill popping, womanizing friend, will be forgotten so fast that you won't even recognize your own face in the mirror. A word to the wise - if you are a rock and roll band with a great sound and killer content, do not put all of your very best songs on the first album unless you are absolutely sure that you can match or top them. Otherwise, you will be just another loser with a great album and an ill-advised record deal.
