The conventional method of salmon fishing was basically with a long double rod and fishing was done in deep rivers with intense technique. But with fly fishing for salmon you can have all the fun of seeing the fish getting caught. This technique using a fly skating on the water to get the catch is known as hitching. The fly is left to move on the surface of the river causing a V shaped ripple on the surface. This attracts the salmon and makes it take the fly or move towards it.

Placing the fly rightly is the basic trick to get the catch. You have to use the left hand to place the fly and then guide it slow of speed depending on the river current. The free hand can then be used to keep the fly in place and for this reason it is best preferred to use a single handed rod for hitching salmon. In a slow current, there are chances that the fly sinks or in fast current, the water may frizz behind fly. In both cases the speed of the fly will have to be adjusted accordingly.

There is also a sight fishing technique. When you spot a salmon on the river, you can easily get behind a rock and slide your fly on the river and wait till the silvery fish splashes onto the fly. The fly size can be chosen creatively. Make sure that you never strike on a splash. One must instead wait till the fish turns and dives to replace the hook.

The flies are so designed to resemble bait fishes or other fish food. The fly is usually very light and casting is a technique. There are several fly fishing casting techniques and the forward cast if the most commonly used technique. The fly is pulled straight back and then forward to land the fly directly on the top of the river at the right distance. After the casting is done, the next difficult step of fly fishing for salmon is to keep the fly on the surface or beneath according to the need. The fly should also seem as natural as possible so that the salmon recognizes it as bait.

Once the fish is hooked, the line has to hold with a raised rod tip. This ensures that the hook is placed in the mouth of fish. The tension faced during a fish run has to be rightly handled to ensure that the fish doesn't break free and set off.
