Crystal Lake Plumber Tom Catenzaro identifies and discusses some problems with water heaters he has come across in his work and shares tips for area homeowners.

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL: Plumbers in Crystal Lake, IL have identified several problems with water heaters that the owners themselves could avoid. Tom Catenzaro of Catenzaro & Sons Plumbing states that internal rust, buildup of sediment, and corrosive fumes are among the most prevalent causes of demise of water heaters.

Internal rust destroys many water heaters. There are anodes inside your water heater that are installed for the purpose of attracting the rust. Once these anodes are rusted out, they need to be replaced. If they aren’t replaced, the rust will begin to attack the water heater tank, and will cause leaks. Catenzaro says that the use of water softening systems speeds the deterioration of the anodes, and if you use one of these systems, you should have powered anodes installed in your water heaters. Powered anodes won’t rust out, and will not need replacement.

Sediment buildup is another major problem with water heaters. Catenzaro says that it forms a layer in the bottom of the water tank, where is keeps the anode from doing its job. Not only does this cause rust to be a problem, but it will also make the tank overheat. The water tank has a glass lining that will eventually melt away and make the bottom fall out of your water heater. Regular maintenance by a licensed plumber can flush sediment from your water heater, extending the life and maintaining the warranty.

A third problem that Catenzaro mentions is corrosive fumes. Many people use the closet in which the water heater is installed to store cleaning supplies and old cans of paint. A gas water heater relies on oxygen to fuel the burner. Clean oxygen makes a clean flame. If there are fumes from chemicals in the immediate area, they will be drawn by the burner. The burning chemicals will create corrosive fumes that ruin the water heater.

MAINTENANCE OF YOUR WATER HEATER

If you will have your water heater serviced about once every two years, your plumber can keep it running without problems, and with much less expense than replacement would be. A plumber can keep an eye on the anodes, flush the sediment, and check the water pressure and other factors that affect the functioning of your water heater.
