Barewall, the gallery and art shop based in Burslem, Staffordshire, are hosting an event for the relaunch of Arthur Berry’s autobiography, “A Three and Sevenpence Halfpenny Man”.

The event celebrates all Arthur Berry’s work, and will include several readings of the book by his friends and loved ones in association with the New Vic Theatre and North Staffordshire Press.

The relaunch, which takes place on Saturday 4th August, will also include a display of the artist’s previously unseen paintings.

Barewall gallery, located in Market Place, Burslem, is the sole official gallery for the exhibition and sale of available Arthur Berry paintings on behalf of the estate worldwide. Arthur Berry was a local Burslem artist who passed away in 1994. Until recently, very little of his work had been released and Barewall are delighted to have a starring role in celebrating his life.

Amanda Bromley, owner of Barewall gallery, describes Arthur as an urban legend of the Potteries. She has also said Barewall are honoured and proud that Arthur Berry’s work has been made available in Burslem, his spiritual home, place of work and inspiration for many of his paintings.

“A Three and Sevenpence Halfpenny Man” is based on Arthur’s vivid memories of growing up around many eccentric characters. The autobiography describes his journey from a young boy to a mature artist. An exciting read from a very talented artist.

Arthur was often described as the ‘Lowry of the Potteries’. In fact, he was friends with L. S. Lowry, and Arthur often took art students to visit Lowry at his studio in Salford.

The free relaunch event will be taking place at Barewall gallery between 2pm – 4pm. Guests will be able to view some of Arthur Berry’s phenomenal work, including pieces such as ‘Allotments II’ ‘Farmers Wife’ and ‘Big Nose’.
