Manchester, England, UK, November 14, 2013 -- Two trained volunteers from The North West, working for Disaster Aid UK and Ireland and responding to the October 7.2 mag earthquake in the Philippines, had found themselves trapped in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. They were then asked to join a Rapid Response Team which left for Leyte on 11 November.
Christine Cassar from Manchester and Ed Cox from Colne, Lancashire were deployed to Bohol to help with the local co-ordination of relief supplies after the earthquake, helping to rebuild shattered lives and communities with shelters, water carriers, blankets and mosquito nets from Disaster Aid stores in conjunction with local NGO Balay Mindanow http://balaymindanow.org.main/
Whilst organising this relief effort they heard of the approaching typhoon which has devastated huge areas of the Philippines on Friday 8 November with great loss of life . Christine and Ed were able to take shelter and at the request of the Philippines Government are now heavily involved in the new relief effort to co-ordinate supplies and help to stricken areas.
Disaster Aid UK & Ireland, together with its partner organisations in Australia, USA and Malaysia, have agreed as a group to send over all their existing stocks to the Philippines. However, stocks have been severely depleted from supporting previous disasters in the Philippines and elsewhere. This will not be enough so more funds are desperately needed.
