A proxy is an authorization to act on behalf of somebody or something. A proxy server on the other hand is a server that links a client to other servers in order for the client to gain access to files and other resources of those servers. As a matter of fact, the proxy enables a client to gain access to files, webpage, internet connections and other things that another server offers but also gives these services in a way that they are simplified. This is actually formed to restructure a complex system and make it look quite simple. However, today they are mainly built for access to internet. These are called web proxies.
Proxy Types
There are about three different types of proxy. They are:
• Gateway
• Forward proxy
• Reverse proxy
1, Gateway: this is sometimes referred to as a tunnelling proxy. This does not affect changes to information it receives from other servers. It transmits these files, connection and webpages the same way it receives them.
2, Forward proxy: this covers a very wide range of internet views. It is an internet-facing proxy that collects information from any area on the internet. This proxy is also called an open proxy. It can be accessed by anyone using internet. It has the ability of allowing web users using it to annul their IP addresses while accessing a particular web page. It may interest you to know that it the commonest proxy around. The particular forward proxy is called anonymous open proxy. Anonymous proxies are in different degrees but that notwithstanding, there are ways through which you can discover where the proxy user is operating from irrespective of the hidden IP address.
3, Reverse proxy: this is a web proxy that offers protection to a private network server. It has other functions such as; caching, load balancing, authentication and decryption. This appears to clients as ordinary server. This simply means that the web user using it may not even know that it is a proxy. It transmits requests to other proxy servers and these servers are the ones that process the requests. When these requests are processed, they are returned as if they are coming from the original server thereby making it appear as if you are not using any proxy at all. As a matter of fact, this proxy is installed within the region of one or two web servers so that all web visitors who visit the server must pass through the proxy. However, open proxy server is installed to enable web user to gain access to all areas on the internet but reverse proxy enables web users to gain access to only restricted websites.
