1. Mary Todd Lincoln House
Mary Todd’s father purchased this house in Lexington, 1832 for his family. The house was originally built in 1803 to 1806 as an inn. The Georgian-style brick is furnished in period and displays personal items of the Todd family including family portraits. Mary Todd, who later becomes Abraham Lincoln’s wife, visited her home often during her girlhood. The house was later transformed into a protected historical site. Visitors enjoy an hour-long guided tour around this 14-room house. The house tells a historical story of Mary Todd Lincoln, the influential First Lady who grew in this house.
2. Kentucky Horse Park
This working horse farm is located 10 miles north of Lexington. The world’s famous Kentucky Horse Park is open to add to your calendar lexington ky. Travel exhibits are also on display throughout the year. If you are from age 10 and above, you can sign up for the special aviation camps that take place at the museum throughout the summer.
4. Lexington Cemetery
The Lexington Cemetery is a beautiful green space encompassing more than 170 acres of land. It was established as a public cemetery in 1849. A walk through the cemetery is guided by labeled metal plates and welcomes visitors to learn about the many types of trees. Bird watchers often visit. This quiet environment lends toward rare sightings and highlights the political, social, military and environmental history of the community. The cemetery hosts a Memorial Day observance with symbolic service on the last Monday in May. Anyone looking to pay their respect is encouraged to attend.
5. Keeneland
Keeneland is a professional racecourse surrounded by elegantly decorated grounds and open to the public. Founded in 1936, Keeneland hosts some of the largest thoroughbred auctions in the country at different times throughout the year. The extensive historical archives of the thoroughbred industry and a retail shop with equine gifts make a visit to Keeneland fan and will alone be one of the best things to do lexington ky.
