One of the most common injuries related with vehicle accidents is Whiplash. Very few incidents report people suffering from Whiplash while diving or other afflictions. It majorly affects the spinal area of the patient which as an extension may result in disorders related to general health by means of unhealthy nervous system. This article will reflect upon Whiplash and information related; that will make the readers aware of the injury.
Whiplash is a fairly common injury that happens due to sudden jerk in the neck, most commonly in road accidents. It results in damage to the bone structures and the soft tissues. It’s often overlooked by the patients as simple injury whereas that is not the case. If not paid proper attention, it may lead to serious nervous disorders. It can also lead to extended period of partial disability.
Signs and Symptoms
Some common Whiplash symptoms can be pointed as follows:
• Neck pain and stiffness
• Worsening of pain with neck movement
• Fatigue
• Dizziness
• Blurred vision
In more serious cases, the patient may have the below Whiplash symptoms:
• Difficulty concentrating
• Memory problems
• Depression and anxiety
• Drug dependency
• Sleep disturbance(Insomnia)
Treatment
In case of such accidents, and when patient faces the above Whiplash symptoms, it’s advisable to see a doctor. Upon examination, the doctor may advise use of neck collar. He also examines if the injury has affected any other internal parts of the body or not. In most cases the injury takes a few weeks to recover, but in many cases, it may take months for the soft tissues to get repaired. The doctors conduct an MRI in such cases, to start with an alternate treatment. Cervical Collar is the best used method to treat the patients, that reduces the movement of neck resulting in reduced pain and to prevent additional tissue injuries. Some exercises are also suggested to patients for better recovery.
One other important way to treat Whiplash is Chiropractic. Spinal/Cervical manipulation doesn’t have a sure shot cure, but Chiropractic works upon the injured tissues and the placebo of the patient, helping with reduced neck pain and headaches. If performed carefully and appropriately, it’s a safe way to treat the injury. A lot of rest is advised to patients, which, apart from spinal recovery, may also lead to other complications like muscle atrophy (muscle wasting), decreased blood flow to the injured soft tissues, social inactivity, etc.
Prevention
We can’t always avoid accidents, but driving carefully is one of the best ways to ensure neck and spine safety. Putting on seat belts help a lot while any sudden jerks that your body may experience while driving, understand how your seat and head restraint works. Position yourself very carefully on your car seat, so that the distance between your head and head restraint is correct. Your wrong posture will lead to complications. Research and get information about Head restraints and don’t take driving lightly. Your body and health should be your first priority, and its universally advisable to take care of it in every way possible.
