Being Lakota, and embarking on my brother Jay's journey of Chanku Luta, (the Red Path) I feel such thankfulness within me for so many reasons it is almost overwhelming.

The waste, greed, and general spoilage of the modern world are the result of centuries of unfounded assumptions about what constitutes the best kind of society. The belief that free market capitalism is provides individuals with the most choice and security, as property owners, and thus the most freedom is one fraught with difficulty. It essentially gives license to everyone to acquire as much they want without a thought for the consequences. Indeed, people nowadays are not only allowed but encouraged to engage in unrestrained consumption, and such a mindset has had a devastating effect on both local environmental areas and the biospheres as a whole.

But there is another way, a way that is as old and ancient as humanity itself. The customs, habits, and societies of Native American peoples offers modern industrial countries a model of living that is infinitely more sustainable. The ways of Native Americans is predicated on a completely different set of assumptions about the nature and purpose of humankind. There is surely more to human life than buying the latest smart phone or purchasing a nice car and a house in the suburbs. Somewhere along the way the world has lost its way. We have all gotten caught up in a consumer machine that tells us what we buy is who we are.

Native American culture rests on a completely different basis. It looks to the fulfillment of the spirit, of that part of us which seeks harmony and peace with the living world around us, to provide meaning and significance. This, of course, has given rise to a society that is simpler, more in tune with nature, and that enables persons to live a less hurried and selfish life.

For years Jay North has endeavored to examine and explore the underpinnings of Native American life and culture. He has written a number of metaphysical books, Native American books, New Age books, and environmental books that provide insight into what industrial countries can learn from Native peoples. The spiritual books Jay North books do not pretend to have all the answers as to how such changes can be put into place. His purpose has been to raise critical questions and to put the issue into a focus and context that will allow for serious debate.

Time is quickly running out to act on a situation that is becoming more dangerous and unstable by the year. Climate change and the effects of decades of environmental destruction and degradation are starting to make living on this planet more difficult. As time goes on, the consequences of global warming, deforestation, and other environmental disasters will become ever more severe and impossible to ignore. Now is the time to look at how we can organize resources in a way that is sustainable, and that meets individual needs rather than every individual whim and desire. The various societies created by Native Americans can be a starting point for developing a new kind of society. Anyone curious about the topic should purchase Open Spaces by Jay North from One Globe Press Books.
