When we entered the establishment and tried to load up the arcade cards we were informed that the credit card machine was out of order. Since we didn’t have any cash on us, the manager went to the back room and pulled out a credit card imprinter. It was like the past had slapped me in the face as the manager swiped the machine over my card. It was kind of comical and understandable in the situation, but I dread to think that there are actually companies out there that still use the old machines.
Credit card imprinters are a thing of the past, as are paper files and thick binders. We live in an electronic world with new advances every day. Understandably it can be difficult to keep up when it feels like a new smart device is being released every month. The phone I have is 2 years old, and that really doesn’t feel like a lot to me. However, when I see that people’s kids are running around with phones with 2 or 3 times the capability of mine, I realise that I have yet again fallen behind the times.
We all know a friend who is struggling to keep up with the technology, and that really is fine. My grandpa still uses dial-up for his internet connection and that’s fine. If he is happy I am happy. However, there is one person that being stuck in the past is not ok for and that is the business owner. In order to run a successful business you have to stay on top of today’s technological advancements.
One very important component of every business, or at least it should be, is the point of sale system. No revenue is made until a customer hands you money for the product you’ve provided. You can advertise all you want, run as many meetings as possible, and invent as grand a product as you want, but there will still not be any revenue gained until after the point of sale.
Due to the importance of a point of sale system it is important to get proper software for it. A quick Google search will demonstrate the wide variety of software platforms out there. As a business owner you’ll have to find one that suits your needs.
Don’t be delusional and think that running everything in your dusty old paper binder is fine. Mistakes are so easy to make on paper, and it only takes one bad mistake to undo all of your hard work. With the proper software you can not only run your transactions securely, but you can also manage your entire business.
