The director of The Cottages talks about the services available for families with loved ones living with memory disorders.

Frisco, TX, Apr 18, 2019 – When a loved one is living with Alzheimer’s disease or another related memory disorder, everyone around that person is affected. From grappling with an uncertain future to concerns about providing the best possible day-to-day care, family and friends are likely to need support just as much as their loved ones. The Cottages is here to help every step of the way.

“A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or another related memory disorder doesn’t just impact one person,” explains Sylvia Gill, Executive Directorof The Cottages. “Their loved ones also need support to learn more about what to expect, how to cope, how to plan and how to ensure the person is able to continue to live life to the fullest. In addition, loved ones are also likely to face their own emotional roller-coasters in coming to terms with just what the diagnosis means and the changes that are most likely to occur. That is precisely why The Cottages was built on a family-based philosophy.”

To that end, staff members at each of The Cottages’ locations view residents’ families as part of their own. From offering a welcoming, home-like atmosphere to make everyone feel comfortable to regular family support groups, The Cottages serves not only those who call it home, but those who call its residents loved ones.

“Family care is an important part of what we offer at The Cottages,” Gill says. “From providing a welcoming environment meant to encourage loved ones to visit and information and resources on our website to our monthly support groups, we are here every step of the way for our residents and their families.”

“Keeping loved ones at home for as long as possible is a priority for many families,” Gill says. “Even so, the need for an occasional break or specialized care during the day so loved ones can work, go to school or take care of personal concerns doesn’t go away. That is why we make our campuses and expertly trained staff available to assist in meeting these shorter-term needs, as well.”
