Kashmir Valley, which is also known as the head of the India has make its unique recognition in the field of handicrafts. Kashmir Valley is also known as the home of handicraft goods and this sector provides the enormous opportunities to the employment in and outside of the state.
The biggest benefit of the Jammu and kashmir state is this is situated in the lap of the nature. Being eco friendly there is very low capital requirements in industries and very high labour rate is there. So huge employment opportunities can be provided in the remote areas.
The handicraft products of J&K is also famous for their functionality, creative designs and enormous sample of craftsmanship. The main handicraft items are famous in J&K are - shawls, crewels, namdha, chain stitch, wood carving, costume jewelry, kani shawls, paper mashi, and carpets.
There are very problems in J&K handicraft industry by which the handicraft industry is low developed like -

The trend value of handicraft production is measured at 0.52 which is a positive factor which shows that the domestic sale and exports have been increased in last two decades and although there is decline in the handicraft production due to turmoil problems in 2008-2010.
The carpets are very unique in J&K handicraft industry especially in silk carpets. It has no parallel quality in all over the country.

Definitely handicrafts play a significant role in the economy of J&K as well the whole country. The major earning in state comes from the handicraft export. The major need to open the new handicraft units and ventures is always there. Government also has found the employment potential of this sector as well the need of shift in policies to MSME sector enterprises.
