What started out as a door-to-door tourism survey of 100 local business premises in Barnard Castle, England, initially unearthed 39 ghost stories. This compelled some more locals to come forward, which increased the number of ghost stories to 102. This huge number, for a small town with a population of just 5,500 is still climbing.

The survey found that the pretty historic town with cobbled streets, meandering river & quaint cottages was pretty horrific too.

"In the town centre it is a rare building that does not hold some dark secret" said Geoff Dixon who organised the survey "we have had many historic battles and sieges, involvement in royal murders, torture, murder, fatal accidents, suicides, drowning and more. This all seems to circle our 12th century castle".

Mr Dixon has compiled a website giving a free online tour of 84 short videos where 51 locals tell their ghost stories, or give details of the beautiful town's murky past. A trailer with clips is on the front page - http://www.bloodybarnardcastle.co.uk/

The videos also include actual CCTV footage of ghosts in the local "Golden Lion" pub. "I know there are a lot of locals still reticent to come forward with their stories" said Geoff "so I think at 102 ghosts we are just scratching the surface. York city boasts at being the most haunted city in Europe with over 140 ghost stories. They have 40 times our population and we are not far behind”.
