Low Demand, High Input Cost Hit Pig Iron Makers

India is emerging as one of the leading producers of pig iron. Pig iron is crude iron, the semi-finished iron obtained from iron industry while preparing iron in a smelting furnace. It is an intermediate product in the form of oblong blocks.

Panjim, 16th October 2017: Pig iron contains high carbon content, besides containing manganese, phosphorous, silicon, and sulfur in considerable proportions. There are many pig iron manufacturers that not only fulfill the domestic need of pig iron but are also exporting around the globe.
Pig iron is further used to produce steel, grey iron, ductile iron. SESA is one of the leading pig iron manufacturers in India which produces low phosphorous, foundry grade pig iron. The spokesperson from SESA said, “Pig Iron comprises three main types: basic pig iron, used mainly in electric arc steel making, foundry pig iron used in mainly in the manufacture of grey iron castings in cupola furnaces, and nodular pig iron (SG GRADE) used in the manufacture of ductile iron castings. Pig iron is used for steel making, Foundries, Alloy making, in automotive castings and other iron-based castings.” He further added, “Low demand for pig iron is mainly due to soaring of input costs. This is a temporary phase. The prices will stabilize in a couple of months.”
India produces one of the finest pig iron free from any impurities. Still, the demand for pig iron in India is decreasing. This decreasing demand is credited to the increased cost of iron ore, an essential raw material for pig iron. Anticipating this decreasing demand, producers are unable to raise the prices of pig iron. Rs 25,000 to Rs 26,000 a tonne is the current rate of pig iron in India. The pig iron suppliers are having a tough time in selling their products at good cost even in the international market due to declining value of Indian Rupee.
There has been a substantial decrease in the sale of pig iron due to world economic crisis as well. The economic downfall has also impacted the automobile sector in India, the largest consumer of pig iron in India. Decreasing sale, resulted from decreasing demand for automobiles, especially cars, is the major reason and Pig Iron suppliers in India are greatly impacted.
