The study was conducted at a group of similar sized Save-A-Lot grocery stores in Southeast Michigan, and compared each respective store’s energy efficiency. The main question discussed was how energy consumption compared between these three stores when using or not using an Air-Row destratification fan.

All of the stores used in this study relied on natural gas as their energy source, making the comparison of energy consumed as accurate as possible. The natural gas consumption for all the stores was compared for the same time period, and all existing HVAC systems remained untouched. The results are tabulated below.

The three stores without Air-Row fans consumed an average of 1,838 MCF (cubic feet), with a resulting energy cost of $18,232. The store equipped with Air-Row destratification fans used significantly less, at 1,301 MCF, with a resulting net cost of $12, 905. The savings of 537 MCF represents a 29% reduction in energy savings, a pattern seen in almost all stores that implement an Air-Row fans system. At a cost of $9.92 per MCF, this store managed to save $5,328 by using these fans—a savings that is sure to make a significant impact on a company’s bottom line.
