Gold was not the only way to strike it rich in this new booming town. Larimer claim-jumped the land of the eastern side of Cherry Creek, laid out a city and in the hope obtaining political favor named the city after the Kansas Territorial governor James Denver.” Unfortunately, at the time Larimer was unaware that Denver had already resigned. Latimer’s intention was to create a major city that catered for emigrants. “He worked with agents at the Denver City Land Company in order to sell parcels in town to business owners and miners.” A few months after the formation of the Colorado Territory the city was incorporated. 

Denver suffered a great fire tragedy in 1863 and flash floods in 1864 and shortly thereafter an Indian war broke out. Instead of moving away and finding another place to go Denver’s citizens became resolved to thrive in the city. “When the Union Pacific Railroad bypassed Colorado on its transcontinental route Denverites raised $300 000 and built their own railroad to meet the Union Pacific in Cheyenne, Wyoming.” Thereafter, Denver became a boom town once again. However, this boom ended as a result of the depression in 1893. In a bid to diversify governmental leaders promoted the raising of wheat and sugar beets, manufacturing, tourism and service industries. Growth began to pick up slowly after 1900 due to stockyards, brickyards, canneries, flour mills, leather and rubber goods that improved the city’s economy. Further, in an effort to diversify, research and development of fuel resources in Colorado resulted in oil and gas regional or national headquarters moving to Denver; which fueled the growth of the city. The 1970s saw the building of 40 and 50 story skyscrapers in the city.

Denver is the county seat of Denver County, Colorado and is one of the few city/county governments that has been merged into one jurisdiction. Denver is nicknamed the ‘Mile High City’ and this is paid to Denver’s official elevation above sea level that is measured from the 13th step of the State Capital Building.
