PEB Buildings in Earthquake-Proof Construction

One of the important factors in building design is earthquake impact. Using PEB (pre-engineered building) structures in building design is one of many techniques to reduce earthquake impact. Earthquake is unpredictable, but there are a few places on earth that are more prone to it than others. However, as a precaution, architects do provide for it even though the construction site may be considered as safe. If the location is known to be seismically active and the possibilities of earthquakes are high then architects will have to make a choice between concrete or steel structure or a combination of the two.

Technologically, the PEB industry has progressed by leaps and bounds, and not too far in the future may become the de facto standards for construction.
Reducing the Impact of Earthquake

A zero-impact building design is not a realistic approach; there is really nothing like this, but it is possible to build structures that will vastly reduce the impact and leave behind only a small damage to life and property. A great way to reduce earthquake impact on buildings is to go for PEB (pre-engineered buildings). The PEB structure manufacture science has developed vastly and architects use is extensively to extend the life cycle of a building structure. Nowadays, PEB structure manufacture technology is extensively used not only in building flyovers and bridges but also in earthquake resistant buildings such as nuclear power plants and chemical manufacture buildings.
What is PEB?

The traditional way of building a structure such as a shopping mall, a factory building, a flyover (and bridges) or warehouse is to move sand, cement, steel, and blue metal to the site and then start the construction process. This is a time-consuming method and may take as many as 18 months or more even for a relatively short bridge across a river that is less than a kilometre. It is not just the time factor alone – controlling the quality of the structure, protecting it from the earthquake and extending the life cycle also suffer to a large extent. Here comes in PEB technology. PEB is all about manufacturing the different elements of a building in a factory and then transporting it to the site for erection. It is considered the best for construction of buildings in earthquake-prone areas.
Advantages of PEB Buildings

PEB offers three types of advantages – cost, technology, and timeframe.

Cost Advantage: Traditional buildings are mostly done at site locations and require the movement of a large number of workers, equipment, and material. It is full of technical disadvantages with logistics leading the pack. In a PEB type building, PEB manufacturers get most of the component manufactured at a factory and then move it to the site. It is advantageous because PEB manufacturers are able to fabricate all the elements to exacting standards in a controlled environment.

Technology Advantage: PEB is a technology marvel and uses simulation technology to understand the building’s behaviours even before it has been constructed. For example, the PEB structure manufacture can study a model of the structure and make significant changes where it is essential to make the building earthquake proof. Using computer technologies, the manufacturer can build multiple models of a building and study its performance under different seismic (for earthquake conditions) before starting the construction work.

Timeframe Advantage: Designing a custom structure specific to a location is a time-consuming process and as a result project time overruns used to be common. In a PEB environment, most structures are pre-designed, meaning they come with a design that has been tried, tested and standardized. Standardized designs eliminate the need for designing from scratch and thereby saving lots of time.
Reducing Damages from Earthquake

As said earlier, earthquakes are unpredictable and cannot be avoided, but it is possible to minimise the damages. PEB manufacturers can help to achieve this by combining steel structures with concrete for optimal protection from the earthquake. They know from experience how much of concrete should be replaced with metal frames and what type of steel to use in a specific earthquake prone zone. More importantly, metal sections, the mainstay of PEB engineering have higher resistance to earth-quake damages than an only-concrete building.
