Name change signals Accuvio’s growing role in tackling environmental admin costs, avoiding regulatory sanctions and conserving the earth’s natural resources

The world must face up to ‘the global natural capital crisis’, the Chartered Institute of Management Accounting warned this week saying that, with resources in ever shorter supply, businesses must adapt or die.
In these new circumstances, companies and enterprises are increasingly turning to specialised Sustainability software to better manage their consumption and emissions data, and to better meet the raft of new regulations concerning greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, energy consumption, water usage and waste output. In response to this demand, innovative sustainability-software developer Accuvio has increased the range of its offering, something reflected by the firm’s new name.
As well as helping to manage scarce and expensive resources, Accuvio’s sustainability software can help companies avoid the costly sanctions of today’s increasingly regulated environment. UK legislation, for example, now requires listed companies to include environmental key performance indicators (KPIs) in their annual directors’ reports. These KPIs must be ‘relevant, quantitative, accurate, complete, consistent, comparable and transparent’. Failure to submit a greenhouse house gas (GHG) emissions report will result in civil penalties and fines.
Outside of Britain, in countries such as the USA where the regulations aren’t yet as onerous, annual environmental impact reports are increasingly required when tendering to win contracts with blue chip companies.
In medium to large sized companies, with multiple office locations and mobile staff, calculating a total carbon footprint, total GHG emissions or waste water production is a complex task, best tackled using specialist software, similar to the way specialist accountancy software, such as Sage, is used for finance and payroll functions.
Accuvio was founded in 2009 after CEO and co-founder Adrian Fleming learned of the difficulties faced by multi-national organisations when measuring their compliance to greenhouse gas emission protocols using multiple complex spreadsheets and data sets. Spreadsheets are time consuming, prone to data entry errors and frequently don’t give a clear picture of overall performance and the underlying factors affecting that performance. In contrast, Accuvio’s software uses automated real-time data collection and collates that information into a form that is easy to understand and further analyse.
Up until this week (Monday May 19th), Accuvio was known as ‘ManageCO2’ but that name that didn’t reflect the full scope of the company’s software offering, says Fleming. “Clients were calling us in to help manage their carbon footprint and GHG reporting requirements and then saying ‘Oh, we didn’t know you could help us manage energy consumption and plot electricity consumption directly from the meter’ or ‘we should have had you here last week when we were discussing water management’.
“Our new name Accuvio suits the broad scope of our offering and our partners and clients have told us that they see it as progressive and trustworthy. Accuvio is a compound word formed by blending ‘accuracy’ and ‘vio’, which is the Spanish for ‘insight’, and we can help give managers, regulators, share holders and consumers a precise insight into a company’s sustainability performance.
“Accuvio is a name that we expect will work very well for us in the United States when we enter that market later this year. Initially, we will be focussing on California, which is the state with the best developed environmental reporting legislation. In the meantime, the UK is our primary market with our clients including B&Q, Carphonewarehouse, Portman Travel and Sage. One of the main reasons the UK is so important to us is the legislative environment. With mandatory reporting of greenhouse gas emissions for listed companies coming into effect last October, we signed up 150 new clients in less than nine months”
