(CRI-report) -Exhibition economy, tourism economy and real estate economy are together known as the three smokeless industries in the 21st century. Modern convention and exhibition industry is known as a sunrise industry in the new century which is endowed with enormous vitality and development potential. It has become the symbol of competition in strength and image among cities. Large-scale and high-profile exhibitions will increase the popularity and economic strength of a city.

Exhibitions stimulate consumption in catering, accommodation, tourism, transportation, advertising, decoration, etc. and promote economic development of the whole city. At the same time, the development of exhibition economy will provide and promote large quantities of job opportunities. It is estimated that each additional 1,000 m2 of exhibition areas can create hundreds of jobs. For instance, the Hanover Expo in 1996 had created 100,000 jobs. Exhibition activities can help companies obtain comparative strength in products, technology, production, and marketing, thus greatly reducing the opportunity costs of access to resources and helping enhance overall competitiveness. The essential meaning of exhibitions for the local economy lies in the wider range of opening, more realistic comparison, more accurate choices, and more efficient configuration for the achievement of better growth in quality to enhance Economic Security Index.

In 1978, there were only 6 international exhibitions held in China and 21 exhibitions held overseas. Nowadays, the number and scale of China's exhibitions have increased by hundreds of times and penetrated into all economic sectors. Besides, all walks of life have had their own international professional exhibitions. According to statistics of China Research and Intelligence, by the end of 2010, there have been over 150 large and medium-sized exhibition halls with the indoor exhibition area of over 10,000 m2 and the total indoor area has been over 4 million square meters.

In 2010, there have been over 3,500 official exhibitions held in China, whose direct income reached CNY 16.20 billion (In this report, Shanghai World Expo is not counted in all the statistical figures of 2010), stimulating nearly CNY 150 billion of relevant industries' revenue and realizing favorable economic and social benefits.

In terms of scale and strength of exhibitions, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou have become China's central cities of exhibitions, with the market share accounting for 10-30% respectively; Dalian, Changchun, Qingdao, Nanjing, Suzhou, Chengdu, Wuhan, Nanning , Kunming, Chongqing, etc. have become central cities of regional exhibitions; in addition, some prefectures, counties and towns are also building exhibition centers, holding exhibitions, and forming unique local exhibition cities, such as Weifang, Yiwu, Shunde, Lecong, and Dongguan.

Since MMI Asia-Munich International Trade Fairs Pte. Ltd. and CIEC-China International Exhibition Center Group Co. together established the first joint venture in China's exhibition industry in 1995, internationalization of China's exhibition industry has thus begun. In recent years, China's exhibition industry has not only participated in or organized some internationally-renowned exhibitions, but also formed joint ventures with famous international exhibition companies, thus possessing a number of world-famous projects.

In 2007, the transition period of WTO ended basically, and China's service industry further expanded opening-up. The number of Sino-foreign cooperative exhibitions was increasing rapidly. The phenomenon of merging and recombination in the convention and exhibition industry will become increasingly intense. More foreign investment will be put into the exhibition hall management. The scale and quality of foreign exhibition enterprises held in China will be improved, and the internationalization level of exhibitions in China will be further raised.

On one hand, the international exhibition giants are marching to China's convention and exhibition industry through cooperation in holding exhibitions, establishing joint ventures and other forms; on the other hand, China's exhibitions are also trying to go to the world. The convention and exhibition industry has its own law of development, namely branding and internationalization.

Since 2006, the venues construction of China's exhibition industry has manifested a structural shift and Central and western China has become the new hot spot. Since 2006, the construction of exhibition centers in China's developed eastern regions has been cooled down apparently, while that in Central and western China represented by Xi'an and Wuhan has continued to heat up, and the newly-added projects have seen a reduction.

Due to the influence of macro control policies issued by the Chinese government, the construction speed of China's venues slowed down in 2006 and dramatically heated up in 2008-2009, which started an upsurge of a round of venue construction. Many newly-built exhibition hall projects have far exceeded existing venues in investment amount and construction scale.

Seen from the overall development trend, China's exhibition market is gradually subdivided, and China's exhibition industry has been increasingly mature in the gradually-open market. Different exhibitions have different target audiences. As long as the orientation is accurate, exhibition enterprises will be able to find a large number of target customers.
China is the world's most populous country with huge market space and consumption potential. Relative to the world's exhibition market with hundreds of billions of dollars each year, China's convention and exhibition industry with the scale of just over USD 2 billion per year is now enjoying huge development space. In China, the convention and exhibition industry itself and the relevant industries all have huge development space for investors to exploit.
