Embracing Neurodiversity and Autism Appreciation, One Story at a Time
Alyssa Lego, the 21-year-old creator of the beloved children's book series You Me Neurodiversity, is set to release her newest book, Julie Visits the Statue of Liberty, on August 10th. This heartfelt tale continues the series' mission to embrace neurodiversity and autism appreciation, aiming to create a more inclusive world for neurodivergent youth.
Julie Visits the Statue of Liberty tells the story of Julie, a young girl with autism, whose family plans a sensory-inclusive visit to the iconic Statue of Liberty. Inspired by Alyssa's own experiences with her autistic, nonvocal younger brother Michael, this book highlights the importance of community interactions for neurodivergent youth and demonstrates how everyone can contribute to creating sensory-friendly environments.
Designed for children ages 5-9, this book is the fourth installment in the You Me Neurodiversity series, following the success of Max and the Tower of Acceptance, Lily Finds Her Voice, and Henry and the Birthday Invitation. Each book in the series is crafted to foster a greater appreciation of neurodiversity, aiming to create more inclusive schools, communities, and worlds.
Alyssa's inspiration for this book comes not only from her personal experiences as Michael's legal guardian but also from the influential figures in their lives. A special character in Julie Visits the Statue of Liberty is Miss Patti, a dedicated teacher who has been integral to Michael's success at the Search Day Program school in Wannamassa.
"I remember the profound impact my favorite storybooks had on me as a child," Alyssa Lego shares. Through Julie Visits the Statue of Liberty, I hope to inspire young readers to embrace neurodiversity and foster a community where every individual is celebrated for their unique qualities. Sharing my family's stories is an honor, and I believe it can inspire others to be the change and celebrate neurodivergence both in literature and in life."
A portion of the proceeds from the You Me Neurodiversity series supports autism-focused charities, reinforcing Alyssa's commitment to enhancing the lives of autistic individuals. In addition to the storybooks, Alyssa also creates accompanying neurodiversity-affirming activity books and educational materials, all designed to support and celebrate neurodiversity.
