Fertility Testing

Fertility tests include:

Ovarian Reserve Tests - Ovarian reserve tests make an estimation of the number of eggs you have left in your ovaries so that you have an idea of how long your fertility will last, whether you can afford to delay conception for a career or if you are entering menopause. If you are over the age of 36 and have a low reserve you could consider moving to assisted reproduction. Ovarian reserve tests often include an ultrasound scan to check blood flow to the ovarian tissue, the condition of the follicles and the number of follicles and a blood test to check for AMH (anti-mullerian hormone). AMH is produced by granulosa cells in the ovarian follicles. It is secreted by early stage, new follicles, so the fewer follicles you have, the lower your AMH will be and the fewer eggs you will have in your ovaries.

FSH Test – This blood test checks for the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) which is produced to help your eggs mature. As fertility declines, a greater amount of this hormone is needed to elicit a response from the ovaries so higher numbers indicates poor fertility.

Follicular Tracking – Ultrasound scans are used to determine the thickness of a woman’s follicles, and combined with LH testing, can give a more accurate indication for the timing of intercourse.

Fertility Treatment

Ovulation Induction – If you have irregular ovulation, a medication such as Clomid may help you ovulate.
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) – Washed sperm is introduced directly into the uterine cavity when ovulation has occurred. This method is ideal for same sex couples, single women or women for whom sexual intercourse would be difficult or painful.

Invitro Fertilization (IVF) – IVF literally translated means ‘in glass fertilization’ and is the joining of egg and sperm in a petri dish. Hormonal medications are sometimes used to mature the eggs which are then harvested, fertilized with a sperm sample and then transferred to the woman’s uterus. Sometimes IVF can be done without medications (natural IVF) or with fewer medications (low stimulation IVF).

Acupuncture – The Woman’s Wellness Centre has a qualified acupuncturist to bring you fertility acupuncture. This has been shown to improve IVF success rates.
