Will Heikkinen Provides Tips for Being a Successful Leader

Will Heikkinen is a student at the College of William and Mary, and he is expected to graduate in May of 2018.

Will Heikkinen is a dedicated individual who has lived his life with the bigger picture in mind. Although he is still an undergraduate, he has a great deal of working experience ranging from event planning, to teaching English as a second language. He is expected to graduate from the College of William and Mary in May of 2018 with an above average grade point average. While in high school, he was able to organize and plan an annual football tournament consisting of seven-person teams from high schools all over the state of New England, and he was able to gain experience as a leader.

Leadership can come in many forms, and Will Heikkinen has been able to develop his skills through a variety of positions. Not only did he organize a major football tournament in his high school state, he was also able to teach English to students while in Madrid, Spain. You can lead in a variety of different aspects, but what makes you a successful leader generally remains the same.

First, make sure you lead with compassion and understanding. A leader needs to be approachable by his or her employees, teammates, or even students, which means being compassionate is the key. When an employee or team member makes a mistake, don’t get overly upset; instead, try to understand why the mistake was made in the first place, and come up with solutions to avoid this problem in the future.

Second, make sure you trust your team, and your teammates trust each other. This is exceptionally important to keep in mind as a leader because without trust, you won’t be able to accomplish your goals together. As a leader, you need to trust that your team will do their jobs without having to constantly look over their shoulders. You can also do some team building exercises to improve trust within the group as a whole.

Third, Will Heikkinen knows that teams need leaders who can delegate tasks to the right people. All people have different strengths, which means you have to attribute the right task to the person with the skills needed to complete the job.
