Chandigarh or the City Beautiful as it is popularly known is indeed one of the finest examples of planned construction with a soul to it. The name Chandigarh literally translates into "The Fort of Chandi". This was termed because the city was established near a temple of Goddess Chandi which also had a fort in its vicinity. The Hindu Goddess Chandi symbolizes Shakti or power which was what exactly Pt. Nehru wanted to show to the world.

The city was planned and built by Le Corbusier who was a French architect. He designed the city on the lines of the human body with each part symbolizing a particular area. The whole city is planned and is considered to be one of the cleanest cities in the country. It is one of the seven Union Territories of the country and serves as a capital for two states, Punjab & Haryana, respectively. There are two satellite towns, Panchkula and Mohali which are located on the periphery of Chandigarh.

City Beautiful is a tourists paradise and there are many places which are awe-inspiring and tempting enough for a revisit. Each area has its own significance and the very difference compels the visitors to visit all the places.

Chandigarh is one of the greenest cities and this is due to the presence of numerous gardens and parks located at different points in the city. One of the most significant attractions in the cities is the gardens and parks dotted all over the place.

Some of the most beautiful parks which have been developed in Chandigarh can be described as below:

Nek Chand Rock Garden: This is one of the signature landmarks of Chandigarh. The Rock Garden is named after its founder Nek Chand. He was a road inspector with the Public Works Department of the state. The garden was perceived by him in secrecy and was developed in the same manner in 1957.

But the local authorities came to know about this great wonder and the area was renamed as the Rock Garden. It is a sculpture garden and covers an area of over forty acres. The whole garden is built from the waste materials discarded by homes and industries. The material has been systematically recycled and used in every part of the garden.

Nek Chand's Rock Garden is designed to look like a lost kingdom and it is a complex labyrinth with paths, gateways, steps, beautiful waterfalls, huge courtyards, and porches. The Garden is located near the Sukhna Lake in Sector 1. There are huge swings in the garden which are one of the most fascinating things here.

Most of the sculptures are made up of scrap and other kinds of wastes like bottles, glasses, bangles, tiles, ceramic pots, sinks and also electrical waste. There is an abundant use of ceramic in the whole area.

One of the sculptures from this garden has even appeared on the Indian stamp in the year 1983.

Zakir Hussain Rose Garden: The Chandigarh Rose Garden or the more popularly known Zakir Gulab Bagh is one of the many gardens which fascinate the visitor. This garden is one of its kinds in the entire Asian region going by its size. The whole area spreads around to nearly 27 acres. It was set up in 1967 under the expert guidance of Dr. M. S. Randhawa who was the first Chief Commissioner of Chandigarh.

The Rose Garden has more than 1600 species of roses which includes both the natural as well as the hybrid varieties developed through the tissue culture. Apart from the roses, the garden is also home to many medicinal plants and trees like the Bel, Bahera, Harra, Camphor, Yellow Gulmohar and several other varieties.

Rose Festival is celebrated here every year which is attended by thousands of visitors. It is one of the major events in the city wherein there are lots of competitions and other cultural celebrations. The best season to visit this place is from February through March when the roses are in full bloom.

Chandigarh Botanical Gardens: Chandigarh can rightly be called the city of gardens. There are two botanical gardens here. One of them is nestled amidst the Rock Garden and the Sukhna Lake in Sector 1. It stretches over an area of 88 acres. The main attraction in this botanical garden is the distinct rock formation which inspires awe in the eyes of the visitor. There is a lily pool in the garden which lends a very tranquil air to the whole atmosphere with fully bloomed lilies.

The second garden is behind the Punjab University. Various plants like the Cacti and many varieties of evergreen and exotic plants are arranged in each corner. This is also the only place where one can see beautiful lotus flowers.

Terraced Flower Garden: The Terraced Flower Garden is located in Sector 33 and is spread out on an area of 10 acres. It was set up in 1979 and is also the venue for the annual Chrysanthemum Festival. There are hundreds of varieties of flowers here but the most enthralling feature is the musical colored fountains which operate on popular Bollywood and local folk songs.

Apart from this, there are many other parks too which attract a lot of tourists as well as the local people to their clean, fresh and healthy environs. The name City Beautiful is indeed proven to be true due to these gardens and parks which play a major role in providing clean open spaces and lush greenery.
