Dr. Lafratta is first surgeon in Brazil to use minimally invasive modular InterFuse® technology.

Minneapolis, MN, December 18, 2015 -- Vertebral Technologies, Inc. (VTI), a spine company focused on developing minimally invasive (MIS), modular solutions for painful spine conditions, announces the first implantation of its InterFuse S™ device in Brazil. The surgery is the first in the commercial launch in Brazil of the expandable, modular- interbody fusion device.

Surgeons are able to optimize conditions for successful lumbar fusion using VTI's intra-operative assembly™ technology to create an ALIF-sized footprint but with delivery through a smaller access channel than with traditional interbody fusion products. The InterFuse interbody fusion device is implanted one module at a time through a small access channel in the back. The fully-assembled device, typically consisting of 4 to 5 modules per patient, provides a larger implant that is designed to reduce subsidence and device migration than other posterior or transforaminal (TLIF) devices.

This week, orthopedic surgeon, Dr. André Luis Rousselet Lafratta implanted the first InterFuse S™ at the Sâo Luiz Hospital, Morumbi unit in Sao Paulo. Dr Lafratta is the president of the Sao Paulo chapter of the Brazilian Spine Society. The male patient had been suffering from neurologic claudication for 8 months.

“I especially like the aspect of better weight distribution over the endplate as a result of the larger footprint of the InterFuse device,” stated Dr. Lafratta. “I expect that this will reduce the likelihood of subsidence and that it will provide stability that will reduce stress on the posterior fixation.”

Matt Kyle, CEO, of VTI said, "The first case in Brazil is an important milestone for VTI that brings our differentiating technology to the Brazilian surgeons and patients. We are excited about the launch of the InterFuse fusion system in Brazil with our distribution partner, Fusão, one of the most important spine distributors in Brazil.”
