What to Do If You Relapse After Your Addiction Treatment

Posted September 3, 2020 by westminsterhousebc

When you go to an addiction treatment like Westminster House, you spend about 90 days in their facility, undergoing different kinds of treatments to make sure you go out a different person.

But recovery from addiction doesn’t end the moment you step out of a rehab in Vancouver. It’s a lifelong process.

You won’t always have therapists and doctors at your beck and call, so the majority of your healing and recovery should come from you. They are only there to guide you in taking the steps in the right direction but much of the work should be from you.

A relapse can happen once you are out of rehab in Vancouver. If this happens to you, don’t panic. You haven’t spiraled yet. Think of it as a hiccup on your road to recovery. If you revert to your treatment plan, you can still continue your recovery.

Give Yourself Time to Feel Sorry

It’s alright to feel disappointed with yourself after suffering from a relapse. But cry over it for a little while and then resolve to become stronger in the face of temptation after that. You will come out of it a stronger and better person.

Get Help

Reach out to the right people. A rehabilitation center like Westminster House will still provide support even after you are done with your in-house treatments. If you suffer from a relapse, you should call them and ask for help.
Find Things to Do With Your Time

They say an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. When you aren’t doing anything productive, you are more likely to succumb to temptations. This is why you should find things to occupy your time. Look for new hobbies to try such as gardening. Gardening is therapeutic. Soil also has natural antidepressant properties. You can try doing crafts activities as well.

Exercise

Exercise makes you feel good. It helps control your emotions and mood by releasing feel-good hormones. Try outdoor exercises like swimming, jogging, cycling, running, and walking. You can also go on a hike. The outdoor exposure can give you the vitamin D that you need. This might not be the cure-all to addiction but it will give you a fighting chance.

Create More Structure to Your Day

Don’t give yourself time to wallow or to get tempted again. Make sure your day is filled with meaningful and productive activities. Create a schedule that you can follow.

Stay away from the people that bring you closer to addiction. Create a support group that you can turn to in case you suffer from a relapse.
