You might know of the effects of addiction to the brain. But what about its most obvious effect? Its effects on the skin? Addiction often does a lot of damage to the skin, with many addicts sporting tired-looking skin.

Here’s what happens to your skin when you are dependent on alcohol:

1. Your skin becomes super dry

As you probably know, alcohol makes you want to pee a lot. It is a diuretic, so if you are not drinking water to replenish your body, you risk dehydrating your body. That means your skin will not get enough water and this can lead to dry, wrinkly, and flaky skin. If your skin feels rough to the touch, it’s due to the alcohol causing your body to excrete more fluids than normal.

Aside from this, the diuretic effects of alcohol can also cause a number of health problems including headaches and dizziness.

2. Your skin is red and uneven

That flushed look happens when your body is inundated with acetaldehyde. Imagine having high levels of acetaldehyde in your system because alcohol doesn’t completely get flushed out of your system due to your addiction.

It’s not just a cosmetic concern. It’s also a serious health problem because this can lead to higher chances of developing throat and mouth cancers.

If you have rosacea, alcohol addiction can exacerbate it. If you have a mild case of rosacea, you might find that drinking alcohol worsens its symptoms. Rosacea is caused by the expanding blood vessels under the skin. This is what causes the redness.

3. You could get jaundiced skin

When alcoholism gets worse, it leads to alcoholic hepatitis. This is a condition of the liver that can lead to death when not treated. It is caused by too much bilirubin in your bloodstream. The liver is no longer capable of expelling this waste material, hence having higher levels of it. This can make your skin turn yellow.

4. You could look older than your real age

Many people who suffer from addiction look much older. Their skin looks dry and damaged and they end up having a lot of imperfections.
