Hernia surgery is a common procedure with approximately one hundred thousand patients undergoing hernia surgery each year in the United Kingdom. This type of surgery focuses on repairing a weakness or opening in the abdominal muscle. It provides relief for anyone suffering from hernias.

Hernias are common conditions that occur when fatty tissues, organs or intestines push through a weakness in the abdominal muscle walls. Open surgery requires making a cut in the skin over the hernia and repairing it through the incision, while laparoscopic repair involves making several small incisions to fit a camera and a thin tube to repair the hernia. Both have benefits and disadvantages. Open surgery is mostly used for larger hernias or when a patient is suffering from a pre-existing condition that could make laparoscopic surgery unsafe.
