Hernia Surgeon West London Sees Rise in Demand in 2023

The demand is on the rise for hernia surgeons in West London in 2023.

Hernia surgery is a common procedure with approximately one hundred thousand patients undergoing hernia surgery each year in the United Kingdom. This type of surgery focuses on repairing a weakness or opening in the abdominal muscle. It provides relief for anyone suffering from hernias.

Hernias are common conditions that occur when fatty tissues, organs or intestines push through a weakness in the abdominal muscle walls. They can occur in several places on the body, though they tend to be most common in the groin area, known as inguinal hernias. These occur more in men than women.

Umbilical hernias are also common and they arise around the belly button, common in children, infants, and adults, while incisional hernias occur where previous surgery has taken place. A hiatus hernia occurs in the diaphragm and causes acid reflux and heartburn.

A hernia surgeon in West London advised that surgery is often required to repair hernias, using a small incision in the affected area and repairing the weakened area. The surgeon may remove the fatty tissue or repair the muscle walls, strengthening the area. In the event the hernia is in the groin area, they push the bulging tissue back into the abdomen and then proceed to repair the weakened area.

Dr Arjuna Imbuldeniya, the Founder and Director at The West London Clinic, said “Our hernia surgeons will determine the best surgery option based on the patient's requirements. This may include open surgery or a minimally invasive approach. The decision is made based on the location and size of the hernia. Surgery can take around two hours, at which time the patient is under a general anesthetic.”

Open surgery requires making a cut in the skin over the hernia and repairing it through the incision, while laparoscopic repair involves making several small incisions to fit a camera and a thin tube to repair the hernia. Both have benefits and disadvantages. Open surgery is mostly used for larger hernias or when a patient is suffering from a pre-existing condition that could make laparoscopic surgery unsafe.
