BRANDING VS. DIRECT Marketing?
Branding - The promotion of a particular product or company by means of advertising and distinctive design.
Marketing - The action or business of promoting and selling products or services. including market research and advertising.
After reading both definitions, you can see that branding and marketing are actually not that different from each other, actually parallel to each other, and require different actions in order for them to be done accurately. You can not brand without marketing and you can not market without branding. Once you have a solid brand, marketing that brand becomes easier. Thanks to social media, marketing can be done with one simple click, making branding that much more important. There are a lot of different ways to brand, and we can get into that with another blog post, but this post is just so you can understand how branding differs from marketing. You can honestly create your own type of branding or branding tactics. For example, if you want your audience curious about what you offer and always surprised and excited, then you have to brand and market accordingly. For marketing, you may do exclusive invite only promotions, or pop up shops, etc. For Branding this, you may use weird color schemes for your flyers or cool animations that you feel will make people wonder about what it is you’re doing or offering. In order to have a solid brand you have to be consistent and creative. You will have to constantly be looking for innovative ways to remind your audience of your brand, without saying “this is my brand!”. Branding is painting a never ending portrait of how you want to be portrayed to your audience. Forget about analytics, and how many people see your posts, or buy your product. What does your product do for people? How does it make them feel? More importantly, how do you want people to feel about your product? Branding can be tedious but it can also be fun, because there are millions of ways you can brand yourself, you just have to first know how you want to be seen, and stick to it. You have to find ways to show your audience who you are and why they should love you. Good branding is attention to detail; Color schemes, fonts, images, things you share, events you host, etc. Whatever you find most important should be known by the way you brand. It can also be known by the way you market yourself. Once you have a solid brand, then you can market it and grow your audience. As your audience grows, then you can modify your brand to be more appealing to those you are marketing to. Once you understand the difference between marketing and branding then you’ll understand how they coexist with each other. The best way to get better at branding, so you can be better at marketing, is to look at different brands and decipher what it is that made them decide to brand the way they do.
Now that we know quite a bit about branding and how it lives for marketing, let’s talk a bit about marketing. Now I’m no marketing expert, and I don’t use math equations like some marketing gurus do, but it’s good to know that if you really want to be serious about marketing, there is some science to it. I won’t go into the science of it, we’ll keep it simple and basic. Once you know your brand or have a solid idea of how you want to brand, you market/promote that brand so you can see who your target audience is. Marketing helps you brand better. For example, If you notice that you gain way more followers when you share pictures of puppies, you’ll start sharing more pictures of puppies. This also has to do with branding if you want people to know your love for puppies, but it’s also a super basic social media marketing tactic. You can go as deep as you want with marketing, because honestly, there are levels to this s***. Marketing happens when you create an ad, share a post, start an email campaign, anything that “spreads the word”. You have to keep track of the responses/analytics in order to take your marketing to the next level. How many people opened your email? Where are they from? What do they do? What did they comment? All of this data goes into how you will continue to market, and of course evolve your brand. Before the internet started keeping track of your analytics for you, you would have had to do it yourself through an excel spreadsheet, but now it’s a lot easier. It’s just up to you to take that information and create creative marketing campaigns for your brand. Look at how the bigger brands market themselves and learn from them. Don’t copy them, but be inspired to create your own marketing tactics, that’s what will take you to the next level. The possibilities for branding and marketing are endless!
