According to an NBC report, under the new USDA rules, all schools in the country are required to offer healthy snacks for kids and not just any simple snack ideas.
With the implementation of these new regulations, millions of schoolchildren across the nation can expect to see more fruits and vegetables on their snack plates. The new rules are designed to improve child nutrition and curb childhood obesity.
"Improving the quality of the school meals is a critical step in building a healthy future for our kids," said Tom Vilsack, Secretary of Agriculture in 2012. "When it comes to our children, we must do everything possible to provide them the nutrition they need to be healthy, active and ready to face the future – today we take an important step towards that goal," he added.
These changes marked the first time that the school lunch program was overhauled. It took 15 years to make this important step that have impacted the lives of almost 32 million schoolchildren who take their lunch in school.
“We strongly support the regulations,” said Diane Pratt-Heavner, spokeswoman for the Maryland-based School Nutrition Association. “The new nutrition standards for school meals are great news for kids,” she added.
These regulations were part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act signed into law by President Obama. "As parents, we try to ….ensure they have a reasonably balanced diet," said Michelle Obama.
"And when we're putting in all that effort the last thing we want is for our hard work to be undone each day in the school cafeteria,” she explained. And this is why 110Athletics have continued its production of kids healthy lunch ideas in order to further this goal.
