How it all began

Patented by Sir Edward Talbot, the development of Aquafan began in the middle of last century. The concept behind the technology

The principle is simple: the available water pressure at the tower is used to spin the cooling tower fan through a specially designed turbine based on the concept of the Pelton wheel. The air requirement at specific heat load and wet bulb temperature is determined in engineering.It is then compared with the available pressure to calculate if the pump can indeed drive the turbine, and if not, a hybrid version may be selected.

Energy Savings

Compared to a fan motor, pumps run at an efficiency of around 70% and therefore cannot spin a turbine at a lower electricity. When residue pressure is available, energy savings can be realized. This may apply when cooling water comes from elevated factory floors. In addition, safety margins that were built-in during project design may cause such residue pressure.

Moreover, in applications with variable heat loads and wet bulb temperatures, a VFD controlled pump may allow energy savings.

Limitations:

• We select the cooling tower concept for less critical processes.
• Chillers may trip if critical temperatures are not reached, so there is no comfort cooling.

• Maximum cell size is 12 ft with a wet load of around 240 m3 per hour.
• Available as counterflow cooling towers
• For larger sizes: modular systems.
