Madrid, Spain, June 24, 2013 - Pedro Guillén, head of the Traumatology Department at the Clínica Cemtro in Madrid, has carried outthe world's first surgical operation using Google Glass, Google's augmented reality glasses. The patient was a man aged 49 who was being treated for a cartilage defect.

This technology meant that 150 people all over the world could watch this operation live as it was carried out in Spain. One of these was Homero Rivas, director of Innovative Surgery at the Stanford University School of Medicine (United States).

"The glasses didn't bother me at all, and at times I even forgot I had them on", Guillén told Europa Press. "It's a very good tool for training doctors and researchers, because the ability to watch operations live will deepen their knowledge".

Google Glass incorporates a camera, GPS, Bluetooth, microphone and a small visor that allows users to watch a projection while at the same time taking pictures and recording videos, using voice commands. This means several doctors can take part in an operation without being present, sharing opinions and information about the patient instantaneously. It will also make it possible to detect colour changes in patients’ faces, check on their pulse rates and the interactions of various medicines.

The operation was made possible by the San Antonio de Murcia Catholic University (UCAM) and Droiders, also from Murcia, which is the only company in the country with the capacity to develop this device.
