Madrid, Spain, May 08, 2013 - The Instituto Cervantes is exhibiting 30 drawings based on the worlds created by the Spanish writer in his novels.

The Instituto Cervantes in New York opened the exhibition “A common homeland. Delibes illustrated” on 2 May. This collection of 30 drawings, produced by the Miguel Delibes Foundation and the Instituto Cervantes itself, covers the literary universe of this deceased writer from Valladolid, seen through the viewpoints and voices of the child protagonists of his works. This is the first city that the exhibition is stopping at in its international tour, and it will remain on show here until 23 May.

This exhibition includes the work of 15 outstanding illustrators, including Emilio Urberuaga and Arnal Ballester, both of whom have won the National Illustration Award, and who have created images that embody the notion of childhood being, in the words of Miguel Delibes, the "common homeland of all mortals".

Half of the illustrations reflect recurrent themes in the novelist’s work, such as attachment to the land, respect for nature and protection of the rural world. The other 15 drawings are portraits of the child characters featured in the selected fragments. All the works are accompanied by their respective literary fragments, which are texts taken from novels written by Delibes between 1947 and 1989, in which we are introduced to boys and girls of different ages, backgrounds, social classes and personalities.

In style, the illustrators have used techniques ranging from traditional pencil and brush (watercolours, oil and gouache) to mixed media (collages) and digital media, all with the aim of interpreting the writer’s novels in a tribute to his work, as well as being an example of the diversity of Spanish contemporary illustration.

The presentation included a meeting by the Miguel Delibes Chair from the University of Valladolid (UVa) and the City University of New York (CUNY).

After its stay in New York, the exhibition will travel on to Prague, Belgrade and Bucharest.
