Madrid, Spain, July 09, 2013 - Classical theatre is once again the star of the summer in the Theatre of Mérida and the Corral de Comedias in Almagro.

As they have done every year for the past 59 years, Mérida (Badajoz) and Almagro (Ciudad Real) have been converted into the epicentre of Spain’s summer theatre scene, offering unmissable events with significant international standing.

The ancient stage of the Roman theatre of Mérida will be showing the comedies and tragedies of Euripides, Plautus, Aristophanes and even Shakespeare until 25 August. There will be seven very different performances, starring or directed by some of the most prestigious names on the Spanish scene, making Mérida into the global epicentre of Greco-Latin classical theatre.

The programme of the Almagro Festival, meanwhile, runs until 28 July. This year it is hosting its 36th edition, entitled ‘The colour of the classics’, including 98 performances (17 of which are first-time premieres), laid on by 44 companies. Nine of these theatre groups are international (United Kingdom, Germany, Mexico and Argentina, among others), underlining the global nature of this theatre event that attracts hundreds of tourists.

The Corral de Comedias Award, which has been presented for over a decade, has been presented to Schaubühne, one of the leading Western companies, which is a benchmark, guide and teacher in the field of contemporary playwriting, bringing together the various art forms within the theatre. There will also be additional events for the audience, including three exhibitions revealing all the secrets behind the tricks of the stage.
