Sophomores at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore have beaten the reigning stereotype on senior-junior interaction at the college level by creating a student handbook for their fellow VITians, especially the first year initiates. Called the VIT Student Handbook it is a one of a kind venture to provide information about every aspect of student life whether it be college, academics, clubs and chapters, establishments around campus, hostel information, which can be viewed at

The handbook gives first year students hands-on information on important aspects of VIT such as hostel facilities, academic structure and recreational facilities. The primary aim of the handbook is to ease and streamline the transition of an individual into college life at VIT. The first week of the website launch was followed by an explosive response from the students at VIT, as this handbook provided them with vital information at a go, who would otherwise spend months discovering the same. Designers have worked day in and day out for months to make sure the website is as student friendly as possible and the icing on the cake is a detailed map which not only tells the students where they are, but also the commute time to their respective destinations. The creators have made a Facebook page with the same name where suggestions and comments regarding the handbook can be posted and questions regarding the handbook are swiftly answered. The creators have made sure they reach as many people as possible by creating mobile versions of the handbook. The website recorded over 2000 hits in its first week and the creators hope to benefit many more fellow VITians with time. Seldom is such considerate thinking for the benefit of their successors seen in college seniors. A practical example of how students of the 21st century have risen beyond their daily responsibilities to benefit the society.
