It prevents large particles from entering the pipeline. They arrest debris such as rust, scale, jointing compound and weld metal in the pipeline thus protecting it from harmful effects. Types of strainer:
• Y strainer
• T type or Basket strainer

Y strainer:
In a Y strainer, the filter is connected to the main pipe at a diagonal angle, giving the strainer the “y” shape. It is commonly used in steam, liquid or gas, but can also be applied in vacuum or suction situation. They usually have lower dirt holding capacity than the “T” type strainers. It requires frequent cleaning. They can be installed in either horizontal or vertical position.

T type or Basket Strainer:
A Basket strainer is larger than y type strainer. It can be installed only in horizontal pipelines. The dirt holding capacity in this strainer is greater than the Y strainer. They are also available in Duplex style which consists of two parallel strainers and diverting valves. It is suitable for robust chemical and abrasive applications.
