What causes Wrinkles and Treatments to Reduce Wrinkles

Skin cells divide more slowly with age, and wrinkles are considered a natural by-product of the aging process and an effective way to regain smoother, more youthful looking skin is by removing skin layers to reduce wrinkles or irregular depressions.

Some of the factors that contribute to the onset of wrinkles include

Aging- Skin cells divide more slowly with age, and wrinkles are considered a natural by-product of the aging process. With age, the inner layer of the skin, called the dermis, begins to thin; the network of elastin and collagen fibers, which support the outer layer, loosens and unravels resulting in depressions in the skin surface. Furthermore, skin becomes more fragile with age; oil-secreting glands are less efficient, making the skin less able to retain moisture and appear more wrinkled. All these together contribute to the development of wrinkles.

Sun Damage- Excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation can result in photoaging or premature aging of the skin that damages collagen fibers (the major structural proteins in the skin) and elastin fibers (the protein that enable skin to stretch). These fibers are vital components of the skin’s connective tissue. The skin loses its strength and flexibility without them thus leading to wrinkles. Additionally, certain enzymes are produced when the ultraviolet light damages skin tissue which create and reform collagen. Some healthy collagen fibers are damaged during the process, resulting in a disorganized formation of fibers called solar scars. Wrinkles develop when this rebuilding process keeps on recurring.

Smoking- Skin that is healthy always regenerates with production of new collagen while old collagen is broken down and removed. According to researchers, smoking tobacco products causes a reduction in the production of new collagen which can result in the development of wrinkles, which can also be due to the lack of blood supply to the skin that smoking causes.

Common Wrinkle Reduction Treatments in New Jersey:

An effective way to regain smoother, more youthful looking skin is by removing skin layers to reduce wrinkles or irregular depressions. Two of the traditional methods used in skin resurfacing include Dermabrasion (scraping layers away) and chemical peels (dissolving skin away). Additional techniques to repair prematurely aging skin include

Laser Skin Resurfacing- You are a suitable candidate for laser skin resurfacing if you have fine lines under or around the eyes, forehead, or mouth; wrinkles under or around the eyes, forehead, or mouth; scars from acne and blemishes; non-responsive skin after a facelift. Laser skin resurfacing is basically a technique that directs short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin to reduce facial wrinkles and irregularities caused by sun damage or acne. Ablative laser skin resurfacing not only stimulates the growth of new collagen fibers, but also results in fewer problems with hypopigmentation (lightening of skin). On the other hand, non-ablative laser resurfacing helps restore the skin contour and appearance with minimal downtime by promoting the development of new more healthy collagen. Fractional laser technology is another option.

Botulinum toxin type A (Botox) injection therapy- Botox (a medicine derived from the botulinum toxin) (blocks the chemical signals that cause muscles to contract) is injected into the muscles whose contractions cause wrinkles, such as between the eyebrows (frown lines) and the lines that radiate from the corner of the eyes (crow's feet). Its effect usually last for 3-4 months. The muscles again become active and the wrinkles will begin to reform when the Botox wears off, the treatment would then be repeated.

Facelift- A surgical procedure during which excess skin and fat is removed from the face and neck is what a facelift is.

Fillers- Wrinkles that remain at rest may require filler to fill-in or lift up skin that is depressed with Hyaluronic acid, a natural occurring sugar polymer being the most common filler used. Commonly treated areas include prominent folds around the mouth, nose, and chin.
