Edtech nonprofit UPchieve announced they reached a big milestone this week, with over 50,000 hours of online tutoring provided to low-income high school students. UPchieve’s online tutoring platform is available for free to eligible students throughout the United States, and the nonprofit also provides free college counseling for students at all stages of the college application process.

“This is a HUGE accomplishment for not only our team, but for all of our volunteers, donors, and supporters,” said Aly Murray, Executive Director and Founder of UPchieve. “We’re looking forward to doubling and even tripling this number in the years to come with the help of all of our volunteer academic coaches!”

With fees for private tutoring starting at over $20 an hour and easily reaching over $100 for SAT prep, academic support has long been out of reach for the 8 million low-income high school students in the United States. College admissions consulting can remain even further out of reach with an average cost of $5,000.

Murray explains, "I started UPchieve because I actually was a low-income high school student, and I found navigating the college application process on my own really challenging. I believe it should be easy for students to access academic support services like tutoring and college counseling whenever they need them. It shouldn't matter who your parents are or how much money they make."

UPchieve seeks to level the playing field by ensuring that all students have access to high-quality academic support from certified tutors and college counselors. Founded in 2016, the organization seeks to democratize access to academic support so that all students have an equal opportunity to finish high school, attend college, and achieve upward mobility.

UPchieve’s goal is to reach all low-income high school students in the US by 2030. Their work has been recognized by Forbes and TIME, and their funders include Y Combinator and the Gates Foundation.
