Due to their long lasting diodes and shatterproof lenses, LED warning lights require much less maintenance than other types. This isn’t to say that they are maintenance free. There are still some routine tasks that should be performed to make sure that the led flashing lights on your emergency vehicle are operating correctly. You don’t want to be surprised by a burned out bulb on your way to a call.
Wash
Your LED light bars are housed in special waterproof lenses but dirt and grime can get stuck to them. While LED light is much brighter than alternatives, this debris can still affect the way the light is cast. This is why it is important to keep your emergency vehicle clean. Washing your emergency vehicle will keep the lenses and casings in top shape for their next use.
Inspect
It’s important to inspect your lights. This should be done frequently. Walk around your vehicle and check for cracks or damage on each light. Inspect during the day and at night with an LED flashlight to make sure you can simulate different conditions and detect damage from all angles. Replace any damaged equipment immediately.
Test
Testing your lights is important to ensuring they are working correctly and no bulbs have burned out. LED lights last much longer than other bulbs but they do still burn out and sometimes malfunctions can occur. While parked, turn on your lighting system and walk around the vehicle to make sure they are all functioning properly. Rotate flash patterns and colors.
Even though they don’t require a lot of maintence and you likely won’t find any defects, we recommend testing and inspecting your lights weekly. Traveling and road debris can cause damage to lights in short trip. Replace any defective parts immediately to avoid further costly repairs.
