Check the readout on the voltmeter and see where the pointer is indicating to. If it's on the left side, or negative side, switch the test probes. If it's on the right side, it will show that the battery is receiving some charge. Where it points to on the meter will determine how much charge it received.

Although they can't recharge a dead battery, they can be used frequently and left connected to a battery without any risk of overcharging. When the charger is switched on the needle of the meter moves to the desired amps, say ten amps. As the battery continues to charge, the needle moves down. When the needle has dropped to almost half of the desired amp, it means that the battery is fully charged. The amp meter has two red areas.
