Decatur, TX, – Women who rush to battle breast cancer by requesting and going through with double mastectomies may experience more pitfalls then benefits. Those are the findings of a recent study that looked into the potential benefits of fighting cancer with prophylactic double mastectomies.

The double mastectomy involves the removal of both breasts in a woman who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. In most cases, the cancer is only found in one breast. The second breast, however, is also removed in an effort to curb the likelihood of cancer recurrence. Researchers have found, however, that this prophylactic move may cost women a lot more over the long run while also reducing overall quality of life.

“Double mastectomies have been growing in popularity over the past few years following the decision of high-profile celebrities to undergo this procedure,” explains Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the North Texas Cancer Center at Wise. “While the peace of mind this more invasive and involved procedure can deliver may be worth the risks for some women, others may find the option is not in their best interest.”

Researchers who dove into the issue concluded women who undergo prophylactic double mastectomies are likely to pay out nearly $6,000 more over the course of their lifetimes. In addition, this more involved surgery does increase risks of complications without necessarily boosting a woman’s long-term likelihood of survival.

While there are some pros and cons associated with double mastectomies, Dr. Echt stresses the decision ultimately lies with the patient and physician. Women diagnosed with breast cancer are strongly urged to talk with their doctors about all treatment options, their potential benefits and risks.
