The founder and lead surgeon of the North Texas Cancer Center at Wise talks about secondary cancers.

Decatur, TX – Surviving one type of cancer only to be diagnosed with another is a very real possibility for some. A recent study cast light on the type of secondary tumors breast and thyroid cancer survivors, and their doctors should be most watchful for. The research shows survivors of either type of cancer are more likely to display with the other if a secondary cancer does form.

The study in question involved an analysis of the secondary incidence rates for both breast and thyroid cancer survivors. Researchers found a significantly increased risk for survivors of breast cancer to develop thyroid cancer in the future and vice versa.

“The findings are significant in that they provide survivors of either of these types of cancers a clearer picture of the need to monitor for secondary tumors going forward,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the North Texas Cancer Center at Wise. “As the rate of primary cancer survivors continues to rise, the likelihood for people to live long enough to develop secondary tumors is expected to climb.”

While more study is required to better understand the possible link between thyroid and breast cancer, researchers do have some theories. At present, it is believed that hormonal risks, obesity, genetic susceptibility and/or radiation exposure may be causes behind the two linked cancers.

“Regardless of the cause, the study serves as a reminder for people who have been treated for cancer in the past to report in with their doctors for routine follow-ups,” says Dr. Echt. “Secondary cancers can be more difficult to treat, making the need for early detection especially important.”
The American Cancer Society estimates there are more than 15.5 million people in the United States who are living beyond a cancer diagnosis today. That number is expected to rise to more than 20 million in the next few years.
