Decatur, TX, – Waging a successful battle against cancer takes more than a toll on the body. For many survivors, the psychological scars left behind by the disease can promote the development of depression and/or anxiety, even if the fight against the disease has been largely successful. New research, in fact, indicates a high percentage of cancer survivors use medications to control anxiety, depression or even both.

“The study’s findings cast a very important spotlight on something patients and their healthcare providers need to be very aware of,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the North Texas Cancer Center at Wise. “Just because a person has been deemed ‘cancer-free’ doesn’t necessarily mean the need for care has come to an end.”

The study in question involved an analysis of more than 50,000 adults, including 3,000 cancer survivors. Researchers ultimately found that cancer survivors were about twice as likely than the general population to report taking medications to treat depression or anxiety. Researchers also found that many survivors also reported concerns related to both conditions.

“Cancer-related concerns don’t necessarily end when the last treatment is performed,” explains Dr. Echt. “For many patients, lingering side effects from treatment may be a concern. Others may find concerns about recurrence or secondary cancers add to their overall burdens. The findings show the importance for both doctors and patients to very aware of these potentially persistent concerns so they can take steps to address them should they arise.”

People who have been treated for cancer are strongly urged to talk to their doctors about all related concerns. This goes beyond side effects related to treatment to include concerns about anxiety and/or depression.

“It is very important for patients to know and fully understand that depression and anxiety are not ‘abnormal’ after facing such a lifechanging circumstance as cancer,” says Dr. Echt. “Help is available. Patients need to know they do not have to face their concerns alone.”
