Truck2290 Heavy Vehicle Use Tax 2022

Posted August 1, 2022 by Truck2290

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recommends that every truck owner/operator registered taxable vehicles in their name must pay the heavy vehicle use tax (HVUT) to operate on public highways in the United States.

The heavy vehicle use tax (HVUT) is a year-wise payment. Thus, truckers need to pay the annual HVUT yearly once a tax year. The IRS allows filings and payments during the time of filing season.

Which Vehicles need to Pay HVUT?

Taxable vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 55000 pounds or more and mileage of 5000 miles (7500 miles for agricultural vehicles) are liable to pay Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT).

How to Pay Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT)?

When taxable truck owners want to pay heavy vehicle use tax, they must first file the IRS 2290 tax form. Truckers must accurately fill out an IRS tax form with the appropriate information and submit it to the IRS along with the tax amount.

Where to Pay Heavy Vehicle Use Tax?

Form 2290 online filing is done by IRS-authorized e-file providers only. Thus, truckers need to visit any e-file provider to file & pay. There are many authorized e-file providers available like Truck2290.
And paper filing also makes it possible to pay heavy vehicle use tax. But it takes more time than online filing. In order, you need to take a printout of the 2290 tax form, fill out manually and submit it to the IRS.

When to Pay HVUT?

A new trucker must know about the filing period/deadline. Generally, the IRS tax year begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th. Thus, IRS allows tax payments during the annual filing season from July 1st to August 31st. So, August 31st is the filing deadline for annual truckers.

If a trucker purchases a vehicle in a month other than July, then the 2290 tax form must be filed by the last day of the month following the month of first use.

What are the Requirements for File Form 2290?

Truck owners must have the following information while filing the IRS road tax form 2290.
Name & Address of Business
Employer Identification Number (EIN)
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
First Used Month of Vehicle (FUM)
Taxable Gross Weight
Number of Suspended Vehicles
