SEP 23, 2015, NEW Delhi: The status of Passenger Name Record (PNR) number, the unique number allocated to train passengers when they book tickets can now be ascertained in many ways, including online and mobile phone means.
Details were revealed by top Indian Railways officials and Travelkhana.com executives while interacting with the press at a meeting held in the city recently.
PNR is Passenger Name Record; a unique ten digit number allocated to every passenger of Indian railways and printed at the top left-hand corner of his/her ticket. The PNR number is allotted when a ticket is booked and Indian Railways allows booking of long distance tickets 60 days in advance.
The PNR number serves as the reference point for all passengers. It indicates the itinerary of a person or a group travelling together. It has all details of ticketing and must include the name of one passenger in the travelling group. It contains the name of passenger, who booked the ticket.
“Checking PNR status is vital to know the status of your ticket booking. There are three primary positions of your ticket booking. First is Confirmed (CF) when your seat has been booked. Second is RAC (Reservation against Cancellation) when you can board the train, share a seat with another RAC passenger and can get berths if confirmed tickets have been cancelled. Third is Wait listed (WL), where you cannot board the train unless RAC tickets have been completely filled,” explained an executive.
To check PNR status, one can use the following means. First is checking online via the travelkhana.com website. Visit the travelkhana.com website and key in 10-digit PNR number. Now select the Get PNR Status button. You can use this online facility, no matter how you booked your tickets.
Second method is to use Travelkhana app in an Android Smartphone. The travelkhana app on smartphones helps to get PNR status using technology like 3G or Wi-Fi.
Next method is to get PNR status on mobile. The technology used by Indian Railways has developed very fast. It is as simple as dialling 139 where an IVR guides passengers to an enquiry system. This service is free to MTNL and BSNL users. But other mobile services may press a charge. This is one of the best ways to ascertain PNR status.
Another way to check PNR status is via an SMS facility. Passengers can SMS their PNR number to 139 and can get an instant update on their PNR status. The railways have also provided other numbers for sending SMS to check PNR status and they are 5676747 and 57886.
“Once your PNR status indicates that your tickets are confirmed, you can set about ordering meals or food items from private services like travelkhana.com. All you need is to login to the website and place an order with the PNR of your confirmed ticket,” said an executive relating the primary business of travelkhana.com.
