Golden Hour: Our favourite looks from the Oscars 2016 red carpet

With the 88th Annual Academy Awards having acquired the hashtag #oscarssowhite and leading ladies such as Cate Blanchett and Reese Witherspoon championing the #askhermore hashtag, protesting against women being asked only about their outfits on the red carpet, this was perhaps Oscars’ most controversial night.
Even as host Chris Rock took to the stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday night dressed in, ironically, a white tuxedo, many glamourous after-parties invitees such as Lady Gaga, Sofia Vergara, Kerry Washington and Jessica Alba also chose to wear pristine white.
Earlier in the evening, Hollywood’s most-revered red carpet saw a profusion of pastels, some sumptuous purples and the icy sparkle of a gazillion carats of diamonds. There were pretty gowns galore, but none of the stars took any major risks. Yet, Hollywood glamour was hard to ignore and we couldn’t help pick our favourite frocks and #askformore:
Pastel Please
While Oscar winner Alicia Vikander sported a “dusty yellow” Louis Vuitton gown and Emily Blunt shone in a baby pink Prada number, the pastel parade was clearly led by Cate Blanchett (pictured).

The Carol star took an ultra-feminine turn in a seafoam green Armani Prive confection. It boasted crystal embellishment, hand-sown feathery flowers and was accessorised with some gorgeous Tiffany & Co. jewellery.
Pant On
Lady Gaga’S “gown suit” was not only talked about almost as much as her performance of her Oscar-nominated song Til it happens to you, but it potentially might have kicked her stylist, best friend and designer Brandon Maxwell’s career into high gear. Maxwell, who is currently the fashion director of the singer’s creative team Haus of Gaga, supposedly spent an entire week creating five custom dresses for her.
Serious Sequins
Naomi Watts dazzled in a blue and purple sequinned Armani Privé number that she paired with a Bulgari diamond necklace and a Bulgari clutch.

Not to be outdone in shimmer and shine were Margot Robbie (pictured) in golden snakeskin textured Tom Ford gown and Forevermark jewels, and nominee Saoirse Ronan in an emerald sequin Calvin Klein Collection number.
Red Alert
She doesn’t care about sartorial rules that dictate that you shouldn’t wear red on the red carpet. Charlize Theron’s flaming red Dior Haute Couture gown was what the term navel-gazing was coined for. The seemingly simple, yet sizzling hot number with a plunging neckline and bare back was paired with a dazzling Harry Winston statement necklace.
Indian Touch
Supporting role: Gauri and Nainika Karan continued their international red carpet run with The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road actor Tom Hardy’s stunning wife Charlotte Riley donning one of their designs.
Jewel tone: Among the glittering array of Bulgari, Lorraine Schwartz, Chopard and Forevermark stones on display at the Oscars, the name of Indian jeweller Nirav Modi stood out. Modi, who launched his studio in New York last year, accessorised Best Supporting Actress nominee Kate Winslet’s Ralph Lauren gown with a Luminance bracelet, matching earrings and a Celestial ring.
Bumped up: India-American fashion designer Naeem Khan designed Rachel McAdams’ sparkly pink gown and dressed the heavily pregnant Anne Hathaway in a glitzy kaftan dress for the Oscar after-parties.
