From being scouted in a crowd at Big Day Out in 2013 to becoming an international and in-demand model, its no wonder Jess Picton-Warlow — also know as Jess PW or Salty — is one of the most recognisable faces of the fashion week circuit.

The Perth-raised, now New York-based model’s career took off when she was cast in Prada’s spring/summer ’16 menswear and resort shows. Now, with all the hallmarks of an enduring career, the model credits “persistence, patience and a bit of luck”, for her success.

“My first season was awesome and I had great exposure and opportunities to help grow my career,” explains Picton-Warlow. Flash-forward 12 months and the 19-year-old Australian has transformed from a national finalist in the 2012 Girlfriend Model Search to one of the most coveted runway-stompers of the season.

The lithe and limber beauty raised the bar when she walked a total of 52 spring/summer ’17 shows, followed by just over 20 this season; head-turning in a billowy blue anorak for Calvin Klein, captivating in utilitarian separates for Ferragamo and wowing in reworked classics for Alexander McQueen.

“I enjoy all the shows I do!” Picton-Warlow tells Vogue, fresh off a whirlwind month of travelling for the spring/summer ’18 season. “The setting is usually what makes it a favourite or extremely memorable; such as Dior's resort show in the desert just outside of Los Angeles or Maison Margiela's haute couture show in John Galliano's personal office.”

When quizzed on the highlight of her career thus far — one that has seen the model grace a number of covers, feature in the pages of multiple international editions of Vogue and be shot by world renowned photographer, Patrick Demarchelier — she reflects on a recent Marni campaign.

"I was sitting next to a lady on the tube in London after it came out and she was reading a magazine and the ad popped up and there I was just chilling on this giant page and she was completely oblivious,” she quips. “Pretty surreal and funny.”

Modelling, as Picton-Warlow sees it, is a great way to meet people and is a career that allows her a certain degree of freedom, but, as with any occupation, comes with it’s own set of challenges. “The challenge is its volatility,” she admits. “It’s not a 9-5. It's never certain you will be booking jobs or shows and you only really know your future 12-hours ahead so you have to adapt to that and keep your expectations low and your resilience high.”

With an Instagram bio that reads “here for a good time not a long time”, there’s no doubt the model has quenched her insatiable thirst for fun in following her chosen career path, for if she weren’t modelling, she explains she’d probably be “sitting in a lecture room of some university studying something I was unsure of in the first place wondering what I would be doing if I was modelling or other.”

The street style maven — who has been compared to the likes of fellow home-grown beauties Julia Nobis and Gemma Ward — thanks “simplicity, uniformity and block colours” for keeping her look model-off-duty ready, around the clock. “I just want to be comfortable at the end of the day,” she adds.

Although only able to return home to Australian shores when her schedule permits, “about once a year if I'm lucky”, Picton-Warlow says her ideal day would be spent out in nature, “we have some of the best and most untouched in the world so I always take advantage of it when I'm back.”

However, with 18-year-old brother, Harry, following closely in his sister’s footsteps — having recently won a Perth model search in 2016 run by Picton-Warlow’s mother agency, Vivien’s — a family reunion may not be so far away.

For model-approved words of wisdom, Picton-Warlow quotes a personal favourite, American novelist Mark Twain. “If you don't read the newspaper, you're uninformed. If you read the newspaper, you're mis-informed.”Read more at:http://www.sheindressau.com/casual-wedding-dresses | http://www.sheindressau.com/princess-wedding-dresses-australia
