Retired couple win best serviced accommodation in Staffordshire award


Jane and John Mottram had been successful throughout their careers but chose to fulfil dreams of property investing into their retirement.

After winning a £500 voucher towards property investment provider Touchstone Education’s Serviced Accommodation Bootcamp course, the couple were able to transform their property dreams through training, accumulating in winning the best Serviced Accommodation in Staffordshire award.

The couple enjoyed a successful corporate background. Jane had run her own business and John worked in the building trade, or in latter years, in property for a housing association.

Jane and John originally had plans to use Buy-To-Lets (BTLs) as their property strategy and attended a few networking events and training with another provider. During this training they completed their first purchase, but quickly realised that the strategy wouldn’t work for their age and that they would be around 110 before it started to make any extra income for them.

They then spent time attending many seminars and training providers in order to research other proven strategies, but none really appealed. Throughout this time people were advising them to go into serviced accommodation (SA). The couple knew about Rent to Rent (R2R) as a cashflow method and eventually decided to give it a go.

By this point they had heard of Touchstone Education and attended a fabulous free weekend seminar where Paul Smith (Touchstone founder and experienced property investor) gave most of the training.

During the weekend John won £500 towards Touchstone’s Serviced Accommodation Bootcamp course and their property journey took off from there.

Jane and John immediately put the training into action. They used ‘Open Rent’ to directly speak with landlords to answer applications to rent their properties. They were fortunately as the first landlord they spoke to had done SA herself in London and so understood exactly what they were doing. The second landlord was a commercial landlord who built student accommodation. They provided a good break for Jane and John and they quickly took on more of their properties and those of other people as well.

The couple currently have one owned BTL, 18 R2RSA properties (with two more in the pipeline), 4 management opportunities being set up, a Lease Option opportunity and several investors who want to work with them on SAs and commercial conversions.

They are also helping other potential property investors by mentoring them and giving advice to move them forward. They are also being asked for advice on interior design as their properties are never in line with current trend on BDC or ABB and they are experts at making properties that are unique and boutique as a USP.

Jane and John subsequently won two awards last year, winning the SME News UK Enterprise Awards 2022 Best Serviced Accommodation Provider in Staffordshire, and winning the South East Star Award for Excellence.
